Here's how to make reddit a lot less appealing and kick the procrastination habit:
-
Unsubscribe from ALL subreddits (top right, click on "edit subscription" then you'll see a list of your subs on the right. You can save the multi as a favorite if you are scared of losing precious finds, then unsubscribe from everythin).
-
Register to a bunch of totally dead subreddits: like these ones so that you front page will be empty and the top banner boring.
-
Go to preferences (top right)
- Pick an annoying language (one you don't speak well ideally) so your experience will be more difficult. I picked german, but spanish works as well.
- select "Don't show thumbnails next to links", "Don't auto-expand media previews on comments pages"
- Untick "show the spotlight box on the home feed", "show trending subreddits on the home feed" and "show me links I've recently viewed"
- Tick "don't show me submissions after I've upvoted them (except my own)" and "don't show me submissions after I've downvoted them (except my own)"
- Untick "allow subreddits to show me custom themes"
- (Opt) ask reddit to only show you ten links at once and 20 comments. That'll force you to click and disrupt your reading experience.
-
Go to your browser history and get rid of links to reddit so it will stop auto-completing and suggesting you reddit pages.
BOOM! Reddit is still fully usable, but a lot less fun and shiny. Your automatic "type in reddit" habit also leads to a disappointing front page.
