Hey guys, not sure if this belongs here or on r/legaladvice so let me know if i'm in the wrong place.
My Mom wants to divorce my Dad. He's an abusive alcoholic etc. She works part time as a pharmacy technician making minimum wage. She has few marketable skills and no degree. She is also somewhat mentally handicapped after surviving bacterial meningitis. Government offered a pitiful sum (500$) in disability pay.
They currently owe something like 200,000 dollars on their house and have no savings or investments. They have refinanced multiple times so I don't even know how their loan is set up now and I don't know how much the house is worth, neither does my Mom. I only know that the house is definitely worth less than what they owe on it. They both have absolutely awful credit, if that matters.
My Mom's afraid to get the ball rolling on a divorce because she has no money, a bad job and two kids (my younger siblings) to take care of. I know it's a typical story, but how can my Mom stay afloat after a divorce. Both partners are in their mid fifties.
TL;DR Family income is one sided, spouse with low income wants a divorce.
This is in Michigan, by the way.
