PART 1
The recent discussion about spending money to be with friends got me thinking about social networking -- the real-life kind, not Facebook.
Most jobs aren't filled by going through applications, they're filled because somebody knows somebody. Not making those friendly connections today in order to save a few dollars might cost you the opportunity at tens of thousands of dollars because you never hear about an opening and people aren't familiar with your skills and experience.
In summary, some social engagements are a good investment.
PART 2, A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TOPIC
We here see better than most the negative aspects of consumerism. Many tips we exchange are about how to cut through the glam of marketing. Buy it quality, buy it used, make it yourself.
That last one is what I'm interested in today.
So many of your skills are sellable.
You don't have to sign a lease for a storefront and hire employees and buy a company van. You just need to let people know that you offer things. Quality, on-time service will spread the word from there.
I made $8 the other day sewing up a couple small tears in a pair of pants. Every local chef I've talked to wants the microgreens I've been growing on a shelf in my house. People are happy to pay $5 for a loaf of fresh braided bread rather than one a few days stale at the market.
None of these are my "day job". I'm a technologist. One of the reasons I'm into this pioneer tech is to escape the world of flying bits and and 16 million colors and 24/7 spam. I like getting my hands dirty and smelling dirt and cloth and sourdough starter.
I think many of you are leaving several hundred dollars a month on the table for doing things you already enjoy doing. All you have to do is let people know your products or services are available for a small fee. Post a picture to Facebook and see how many people say "I'd buy that!" You might be surprised.
PART 3, BECAUSE THE BEST THINGS COME IN THREES
If you aren't using "cut and come" for harvesting lettuce you're doing it wrong.
