Now I read that every degree you lower the thermostat in the winter you save about 10% on energy costs, so I figured lowering it from 68 to 65 degrees would put an extra $20 in my pocket each month. What I have noticed is that no matter if I set it to 68 or 65, with the outside temperature being 30, the furnace seems to turn on about every 20 minutes and run for 3 or 4 minutes. Since it is on for the same amount of time at the same frequency, am I really saving energy? Or is this all in my head that it runs the same amount of time and if I actually timed it I would see the difference?
