I'm hoping someone can shed some light on how I can rectify this situation. I moved to England about 5 years ago and have been living here continuously ever since. I have duel-citizenship between a country in the EU and the US, which allowed me to move and work here without having to worry about receiving sponsorship from an employer.
My issue is that it's recently come to my attention that I should have been filing taxes in the US my entire time living in the UK. I was previously not aware of this and so haven't filed taxes in the US once in last 5 years. I have a pretty straightforward financial life -- single income, no investments, some managed and manageable debt. I don't have any debt in the US (like student loans). The person who told me about this issue said that if you earn under a certain threshold, you do not have to pay tax in the US, but you do have to file. I believe I've always earned below this threshold.
So, my questions are: what am I suppose to do now? What are the first steps I should take to fix this? Also, how much trouble can I get into for not filing taxes for this long? Thanks everyone for any advice offered!
