Saw the phrase "Penny wise but dollar stupid" on here recently. What are some examples of this, and how do you avoid it?

I am making a conscious effort to be more frugal as my fiance and I save for a wedding and a house, and this phrase really struck me. I have a proclivity for over-fixating and I'd like to make sure I'm doing it on the right things.
