Hi! I'm looking for some help with cars. My car recently flooded and may be totaled. (UGH). However, this may end up being positive because I would love something more cost-effective. I drive a ten year old mini and love it. While I am looking for something smallish a little bigger would be nice. I live in new england but didn't grow up here so am not the most confident snow/ice driver. My family is also 400 miles away so fuel efficiency is great. I'm not looking to get brand new, but likely no more than 5-6 years old. I would say my budget is up to 16k, but I'm willing to pay more for something meets my (overly specific) criteria. I'm also considering the fact that due to school and then grad school, it's not likely I'll buy another car in the next ten years. So considering I want to have kids, I want 4 doors and more cargo space than the mini.
some more thoughts:
- I'm in love with subarus, but I know the newer ones have issues. What model years are no longer considered BIFL friendly?
- What are maintenance costs like on VWs compared to subaru/ toyota/ honda? The mini is so expensive and I don't want to fall in that trap again.
- I don't love the idea of an suv (I'm more apt to stick with a coupe or look into small wagons, but i'm open to something small that handles like an suv, not a car).
- Any of the prius models also look great but I'm worried about driving it in snow. What would the handling be like with snow tires? If anyone has experience with this, I would love to hear it!
- How reliable are priuses over time?
- My dad is cautioning me away from 100% electric, do you think this is valid?
TLDR: What is reliable and safe, AWD or 4wd, and a hybrid or gets great gas mileage? Thanks :)
