I posted this over in woodworking, but didn't get any responses.I am an artist and I paint garden totems. I have been using 4x4 smooth western cedar, but have been having a difficult time getting quality pieces. My lumber yard never seems to have quality product any more- lots of knots and twists and curls. They shake their head at me when I tell them I need a straight piece. (I live in a small town, not much choice of vendors) It's getting to be a real pain in the ass to find quality lumber for these posts. I'm considering using a composite material like Trex instead. I would need to route grooves into it and paint it while new.My normal painting regimen on cedar is to use a urethane modified acrylic bonding primer (XIM-UMA brand), then paint with acrylic artists color, then top coat with a UV marine varnish. Is this something I can do with a composite? The Trex site says you can paint it after 16 weeks of weathering- that won't work for me.Any info or experience with this would be most helpful.
