I've decided I'd like to pay for my fiancé to go to college because I know it's something he's always wanted to do. I'm the only one between the two of us with a stable job and minimal debt.
Unlike him, I was a lucky/privileged kid with supportive parents and did college the "traditional" way entering a 4 year university right out of high school on scholarship. Because of that, I have no idea how to apply for financial aid for him or even begin to save up. Also, I was a linguistics major which means I've never in my life taken a finance or business course and have no idea what I'm doing most of the time.
Some facts which may be relevant:
-
I make 60K a year (which turns into 40K after taxes, 401K deductions, health insurance, dental insurance, etc.)
-
Atm I have no vehicle-related expenses because I drive a company vehicle
-
I live in California so my rent is pretty high. I spend about 15K on rent-related expenses each year.
-
The college we live closest to is CSUN and from their website it looks like a full-time student living off-campus would have to pay about $23K a year.
Can anyone give me some tips for how much I should ideally set aside each month to achieve the goal of putting him through college? Any tips on savings accounts? Loans? I'm overwhelmed and don't even know how to begin the process.
Please be kind, this is a throwaway account because I'm fully aware of what an idiot I am.
Thank you so much for any help or insight you might have.
