So I’m currently a freshman in college and I turned 18 a few months ago. Trying to be responsible adult about my money (not a lot, only about 2.5k in my savings account), I decided to download the app Mint. I used the credit check on Mint and to my surprise there were two accounts open. A student loan, which I was expecting, and...a Target credit card (the RedCard? i think you can only use it in Target but a credit card nonetheless). Of course I was worried because I haven’t applied to any credit cards at all yet. I called my mom immediately to see what it was about. I first asked her if she got a credit card in my name, she denied it at first until I specified it was a Target credit card. She then told me she hasn’t used it but I could see that there was a due balance of about $30 that Mint somehow saw. I’m sure she was surprised that I found out. Luckily for me I found out the first month it has been active. She then told me she was planning to give it to me when I came back for Thanksgiving — I go to college about a 2 hour drive from home.

We don’t have the best relationship and I’ve told my older brothers that they should check their credit scores in case she did the same with them. I’m not here for an analysis of my mother, but what can I do in the future to avoid this from happening again?
