I get a lot of trash talk from friends and family alike for keeping electronic doodads, random electrical and mechanical components, spare parts, and for taking parts out of something that had broke and storing them for future ideas. I'm no hoarder, but I do have two filing cabinets with drawers filled with miscellaneous stuff (all sorted by drawer of course) and have been known to have a cluttered work/ living space (I'm in college so my living space is my work space). When I offered my roommate that I could fix her door lock "because I have a spare slide bolt in one of my project bins" her response was "can you even find it in one of your hundreds of toolboxes." (it should go without saying that since she decided sarcasm was better than thanks I haven't made time to install the new lock for her)Whenever I try to explain why I'm taking apart something for parts I always try something along the lines of "because the [component] in this [insert broken appliance here] really nice, plus the [random part] is almost a universal part." But that just gets me strange looks and the occasional disappointed head shake.Does anyone else have this problem? Do you try to justify your scrounging to others? I haven't had much contact with other Makers/ DIYers in my personal life, so I don't really know who else to ask. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2iVkNIa
