Where I live, phone plan pricing is astronomical. A good alternative is to grab a data-only plan and then use a VOIP service for calling and text. With some companies you can actually use their tablet data plan in a phone, but make sure you do your research.
For reference I'm using Fongo for calling and text, which costs about $2 a month. I have a Fido 3GB tablet data plan for $15 a month, so my monthly cost is only $17 (CAD). The equivalent with a talk, text and data plan would be upwards of $60-70 with a contract. YMMV, but its worth looking into.
