I am 19 and cannot afford rent near my school. I can travel anywhere in my state for free with public transport. I don't mind living in a dangerous area, but I don't want to live in the worst of the worst areas of my state. I am willing to commute up to 45 minutes, but any more than that and I start skipping class/work. My current roommate is completely insane and I can't stand living with her anymore, and I would really like to find a studio/1br if I can.
I have found some shady offers on Hotpads, Zillow, craigslist, etc but I am wondering if that is really the best I can do. I am tenacious and have good credit (almost 800); my current roommate will not give me a good recommendation but I can still ask and see if she will be reasonable for once. My mom constantly fought with my previous landlord and caused issues so I may not be able to get a good recommendation from her either.
I can look into hiring a real estate agent/getting free help from one or something if you think that would help. I am from a large Slavic family and we know all the other Slavic people around so I can probably get around the grapevine to find someone. I haven't been able to find a great apartment through that though because most of them are located further away in the state than I am looking to live or have really long leases when I'm only looking to stay like 9 months to a year. I don't want to accept money from anyone either.
