My family and I save money when traveling by spending more on our hotel room than we need to. This past weekend we stayed in a room with a full kitchen for only $40 more per night (compared to a room at the same hotel with no kitchen). By doing so, we made most of our own food, and in fact ate out only once the entire trip: on the car ride home. The trip's destination isn't known for its cuisine, and so we missed nothing. After groceries and the increased room cost, we saved about $160 (including tips). This was for a short 3 night trip: you'd save more on longer trips.
