Hello all, I am a new poster here but wanted to share my story about crushing student loan debt. So like any other millenial I went college right out of high school. I couldnt decide what I wanted to do, switched majors several times and ended up dropping out of school two years later with 41k in student loan debt. Yes... Idiot. With no options, I enlisted in the military as an electrician (which deferred my student loans). 6 yrs later I got out honorably. I enrolled in school for electrical engineering and began recieving money for the g.i. bill. Heres the smart part... I got a job working as an industrial maintenance techician full time while going to school. I took the housing allowance from the G.I. bill housing and started crushing my old student loan debt and Im about down to 17k now. If everything goes as planned, ill get my EE degree for free and paid off 35k of my old student debt while acquiring skills of a decent paying career (52k/yr) in case my EE degree doesnt work out.
Obviously this isnt for everyone and honestly replacing sump pumps and like for 10 hrs a day and going to class afterwards is killing me but when theres a will theres a way. When its all said and done itll have taken me about 15 years total to reach a 70k salary and no debt.... then maybe just maybe I could think of buying a house. Just a little motivation for those of you who feel doomed right now. Oh yea this is while paying child support.
