My mother is essentially scum. She has no credit because she has tons of debt. She picked up my 18 year old brother and takes him to sign a lease and put down his SSN for her to move into an apartment with her deadbeat boyfriend. My brother doesn’t know anything so he agreed. In exchange my mom bought him a bike. Great. Is there any way out of this for him? I know how she is and she’s going to screw his credit forever. I can’t let her ruin his life. Any way I can get him out of this?
UPDATE: I called my mom to ask what she had my brother sign and whether his credit would be impacted and she hung up on me. So I went down to the leasing office with my brother. It turns out he had just signed an application for an apartment and if it had actually been approved he would have been financially liable had my mother ceased payments. The office staff gave me a really hard time because I was speaking for my 18yo brother and no part of the application can be altered without both applicants present. I mentioned that my mother claiming he would live there if he isn’t constitutes fraud (number of tenants was a requirement on the application) and that seemed to get them to take me more seriously. I kept hounding them and finally got them to tear up my brother’s part of the application and return the copy of his SSN card. I feel sick to my stomach because my mother is such trash but at least my brother learned to not trust her.
