My wife and I recently got married. We received my wife's credit history report and surprisingly and unfortunately saw the following balances:
- Student Loans: $142k
- Auto Loans: $50k
- Credit cards: $6k
After looking into this, we noticed that her brother has opened up these loans as her as the primary borrower. I know people have mentioned there are 2 options - 1) file fraud charges or 2) pay off the debt ourselves.
Is there a way to get around this and somehow transfer the debt back into her brother in-laws name? or her parents names? if either of them were to approve having it transferred back into their names.
Appreciate your help Reddit community!
Edit #1: They are a very close-knit family and I think her parents/close relatives would either 1) pay the loan or 2) be willing to be named as the primary borrower. I was wondering if someone knows the process for transferring primary borrowers? We are willing to be okay with my wife's credit history being scarred if we can get the debt off our books and work to repair her credit over time. I understand this is fraud and people are saying to report him, but I'd like to show empathy first before destroying a relationship and a family.
