I'm getting quotes from moving companies like Atlas. Some are way cheaper than others and I'm not really sure what I'm going right or wrong here.
I have a 2br apartment. At the moment, I plan on only bringing:
-
1 king bed
-
3 side table drawers
-
a love seat
-
Stand mixer, few pots and pans
-
Maybe 2 dozen smaller boxes (clothes, games, books, crap)
-
Collapsible Desk & computer
I'm getting quoted for $5,500~6,500 to move from California to Montreal for all of this from two major moving companies. Other smaller companies or self-pack (UPack) containers are giving me quotes like $4,000 which seem more reasonable. It sucks because I budgeted $3,000 to move but clearly I won't be making that work...
Has anyone moved across countries like this before such a long distance and had similar pricing? Ive searched around and people even on /r/frugal were like "upack is so cheap for cross country!". But, I have family in Pennsylvania. I did a quote with Upack to their door, and it came out to be $3500 from California. That's only a grand less than one company quoted to Montreal directly and they would help pack too! Upack seems to totally rip me off, and I remember that being the case moving here too.
I'm beginning to think I need to sell everything and just drive myself, ship anything via UPS myself to my inbetween in PA. Then drive it all up from there. It's such a pain though, Im super anxious and I hate selling to random strangers.
One alternative I'm considering is UHaul trailer. I'm considering driving back to the east cost, and if I do, it would only cost me ~$350 to install a hitch and $500 for a trailer. This seems to be my best option beside selling, but I'm terribly worried about transporting my own stuff cross country and having the trailer stolen or something X.x
