I recently moved to Arkansas and was disappointed to learn they have one of the highest car insurance rates of all 50 states. I had no choice: I just got a new job here. But with my new job and finally being an adult, I decided to add a few things to my policy: renter's insurance, and a personal umbrella. I was promised the full amount would be about $160 per month by the friendly sales associate on the phone. Next thing I know, my bill shows up for $270. Seems a little high, I thought. They probably made a mistake.
Called my local agent, and no mistake. I have a number of new fees added on. Apparently they are charging me a large fee for getting rid of my multicar discount (just sold my old '97 Honda Civic) and the rest of the amount is for a car accident I had two years ago. Now to put things in perspective, in Tennessee I was paying $97 per month for both the Civic and my used CRV. Well, I was unhappy, but agreed to pay since my agent assured me this was only temporary. Plus I was really lucky to be paying such a low price, really. I would soon go back to my new monthly bill of only $196 per month.
Then next month comes. The bill's now grown to $290.68. I really don't understand how they do their math because they now have me listed as paying for two "homeowner's insurance" ($12.58 each) and a fee for the policy change ($41.38), plus my current policy (which that part now appears to be less, but not $196). I was going to call back and figure out what's going on, but I work 70-80 hours a week and don't have time to keep on top of every bill. I hated to leave State Farm because I've had them ever since I got my first car in college about 10 years ago. But Liberty Mutual is now only charging me $157/ month even with my accident factored in, and it's locked in for a year. The sales associate there told me that half her sales come from people leaving State Farm due to their prices rising with no just explanation. People that have been with the company forever. I was just wondering if this is a problem others have had. Is the company actually using various fees to attempt to up people's insurance bill each month? Does someone who works there have an explanation?
TLDR: State Farm increased my bill by over a $100 per month than what they promised me. Whhhhyyyyyy?
