This is based on my own experience and it's a quick read, since most of the "mega-thread" or "info threads" are too big and go in over my head.

1) Sign up for Experian Creditworks Basic (http://ift.tt/2crZdmm) -- they've made this link harder to find on their website since the Equifax breach, but it's still free and no credit card is required. It will send you an e-mail every time your account is hit with an inquiry (e.g. when someone tries to open a line of credit with your identity). Tested and working, since I received a notification from Experian right after I opened a new credit card account a week ago.

This is free, so it won't let you LOCK your Experian credit report, but read on.

2) Sign up for Transunion TrueIdentity Free -- again, no credit card required (http://ift.tt/2xcqvdE) -- this one lets you LOCK your credit report for free, plus they'll text you whenever there's suspicious activity. They also do a free scan of your SSN and e-mail across the Dark Web going all the way back to 2006.

3) Sign up for Equifax Trusted ID Premier (http://ift.tt/2wME6Jd) -- It's free and no credit card is required, even if you weren't affected by the breach. It will let you LOCK your Equifax credit report. There's a lot of bullshit rumors going around that enrolling means you'll lose your right to sue Equifax or that the website is not secure and your information will be lost. The lawsuit claim is horseshit (go Google it, I won't waste time here) and guess what, Equifax already has your personal info including SSN (and they've already most likely leaked yours), so there's literally nothing to lose from this.

4) Sign for free on www.creditkarma.com to get your free Equifax and Transunion credit report every 7 days, plus they'll e-mail you each month if they find any new inquiries for account openings on either of your Equifax or Transunion profiles.

That's it. Don't listen to all the other horseshit flying around online. Don't waste money on credit freezes (unless it's free in your state), and don't even trust me if you're unsure. Just Google everything I've said and you'll know the facts for yourself.
