I don't know where, when, or how this trend got started, but this sub gets bombarded with questions about getting a dumbphone/flipphone that only makes phone calls/texts/whatever.
Everyone, this is the complete opposite of simple living. The smartphone is a complete revolution in minimalistic lifestyles, yet for some reason many people are trying to exorcise it from their life as if a demon resides in their phone saying, "PLAY CANDY CRUSH, UUSSSEEE ME!"
I get it, it can be distracting. However, do you really think going from a smartphone to a flipphone will solve anything? Here is a paraphrased example that encompasses 90% of the dumbphone questions on this sub:
I'm so distracted by my iPhone, I hate it! I feel like I'm wasting my life on it! Can anyone suggest a fliphone or dumbphone to switch to?....BUT, I need GPS because it's required for work so can you suggest a good GPS?.......ALSO, I like need Spotify, I can't survive without it. So maybe a flip phone that can do apps? or I'll just get a designated music player.
The problem isn't the smartphone, it's how you use the phone. The "Nuke everything and scorch the earth" solution is almost never the right solution.
Addicted to your social media? Delete the apps. Addicted to Candy Crush? Delete the app. Constantly checking the news? Put the phone in your bag or, shocker, delete the app.
Smartphones have completely changed the way we live. A GPS, mini-computer, music player, bank, etc. etc. all in one device? How cool is that? If you feel unsatisfied with your life and feel like you're on your phone too much, THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE PHONE. It is your life.
Take a good, hard look at how you live your life.
Do you use your phone all day because it's the phone's fault or do you just have no hobbies?
Are you addicted to your phone or do you just say that as an excuse to not go to the gym?
Getting rid of your phone is an easy solution. It will feel good for a few days because you feel like you're making a change. However, it's an artificial one; the root problem(s) in your life won't be addressed.
There are dozens of reasons for why you are pon your phone too much, and none of them point to the phone being the problem itself. It almost always stems back to how your life is and the dissatisfaction many of us have with it. Isn't that why we want to live simpler lives? To produce happiness? Smartphones can be a help with that, not a detriment.
Trust me, I've been down that road. Dumbphones are just that; dumb. Amazing for their time, but nearly obsolete in our new world. I used a dumbphone and it sucks; I lasted a week before I switched back to my Galaxy S6 which I've had for two years now.
Unless you truly live a life where you only need calls and texts, stick with your smartphone. Instead, look at your life. You may find that your smartphone could be one of your greatest assets.
