So my husband and I are military, and moved to our current base about a year ago. We found this great townhouse that we loved, and had a move-in special going on for one free month of rent. We also retained $50 off/month for providing our own washer and dryer, as well as a 5% discount for being active military. All in all, our rate was $1140/month (+ $25/month for pet rent). Our BAH is $1383/month, so we have been able to pocket almost $200 every month.
We had our first baby in march, and we chose for me to stay home for the first year. We have been able to pay all our bills, save, and spend lightly with our tighter budget. Our rental company sent us a letter stating that if we wanted to renew, the rates would go up, and priced out how much rent would be per month depending on the lease length. I chose the lowest rate, $1211, and went to our leasing office.
I asked if we could pay a flat rate of $1200, knowing that it would save us nearly $150 next year that we could put toward other things (mainly debt). We were able to get our lease renewed for $1187.50/month. So we now pocket $175/month instead of $164. It never hurts to ask for a reasonable change that can help you financially!
