I was looking at my 401K from a previous employer and realized that I have $143K but only about $35K of that was my money that I decided not to spend.

I started this job in 2009 and left about 5 years later. By the time I left, it had grown to about $97K, with $21K of that being market appreciation. Of the $76K of actual contributions, only $51K came from me, the rest was free money from employer contributions.

The $51K of before-tax contributions would be about $35K of after tax, or the price of a nice car that I could have bought over the same 5 year period.
