I am currently taking a jewelry and metalsmithing class. I really like the class and want to start on a project for myself. I'm a really big nerd, and since my dad got me started into the nerd culture. One of our favorite series is Lord of the Rings. I've just completed a ring in this class, and I know how to melt things down, so I thought (with my mom's permission) I would melt down some of her really old gold jewelry and make two of The One Ring of Power out of gold, one for myself and one for my dad. Now, the studio does have a propane and oxygen torch setup, a hammer room, the tools to make ingots, pickle metal, and various things, but no engraving set. I know that I could probably find enough gold and melt it down, and if I had to, make it into a ring with gold solder. Just in case you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about a curved gold ring (curved on top as far as I could see. I've been told this is called half rounded? it's very subtle though) that has ancient elvish inscribed on the inside and out of the ring, with the inscription almost glowing an orange, yellow. This is also known as The One Ring of Power. Just to clarify, I go to a community college, with good funding, but since it is a community college, it doesn't have many classes in this and doesn't teach every process. My question and problem is this: how do I get the engraving on there. I don't have the tools for it and I don't have the skill. I suppose I could learn, but how long would that take to get to the level of being able to inscribe the correct inscription on the ring. Also, I don't have the tools so I would have to buy them. This leads me to the conclusion, that I should make the ring and send it to be engraved. Does anyone know anyone who could do that for relatively cheap (I live in the D.C., Maryland, Virginia area)? I know google exists, but I just want to make sure I'm getting someone who is good.I have thought about maybe trying to cast it. I know nothing about casting, but I did briefly talk to my teacher, and she says she heard about lost wax casting where you make a vulcanized rubber mold, made a wax item out of that, made a crucible type thing, and then burn off the wax. You then pour your gold into there. I'm just not sure if that would get me results. I am mainly considering casting because I have ordered a cheap cosplay ring that is the right size, shape, and has the correct engraving. I figure I can use this to make the gold ring out of. So I guess my question is this: for someone with limited resources and a lot of old gold my mom has donated for this project, what would be the best way to make the One RingAlso, what should I use to get that color in the engraving? Thanks so much, I hope I didn't sound like I wanted to be spoon fed answers/a project, but I just really don't know a lot about this, and my college doesn't have the resources, manpower, or knowledge to teach me. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2fHR80S
