
New to the finishing world and here in Los Angeles County we don't have plain old mineral spirits. Started with 50/50 Klean-Strip SCAQMD paint thinner and Varathane oil-based poly. Tested out on some stained (also Varathane oil-based) scrap. Let the stain dry about 18 hours then applied the poly but it bleached a few spots. Sanded down, re-staining and waited 48 hours, all was well afterwards.I've learned most of our low VOC solvents will be primarily acetone (paint thinner MSDS says 60-90%). At 50/50, it seems the acetone dries so quickly that it's hard to wipe much more than a few sq.inches at a time before the poly gets gummy and leaves drag marks from the cloth I'm using. Any higher ratio and I might as well just use straight acetone but that seems rather hot and I'd hate to have to re-stain things all the time.Klean-Strip has a few other products available at my Home Depot...Painter' Solvent which "replaces MEK, Toluene, Xylene and VM&P Naphtha for most applications." Also primarily acetone (up to 95%) and Methyl acetate (5-25%).Turpatine, a turpentine substitute which is 70% alpha-Pinene (my chemistry is lacking) and <30% turpentine.Lacquer Thinner which is apparently 60-100% acetone and 1-5% ethanol.Anyone have any experience with these or suggestions specific for my neck of the woods?
