So this past May I went through a very traumatic event at a party with someone who I considered a friend. I won't go into detail but I was in shock the morning after and I told my best friend and other roommate and they suggested I go to the hospital to get a rape kit done in case I decided to press charges. I went to the hospital and they collected hair and my clothes. I was also given shots and medication to prevent STI's. I was told multiple times that I would not be charged for any of this because I am a victim of a crime. I gave them my friend's address because I did not want to tell my parents and I would be moving out of my dorm soon. She got a bill over the summer and I tried to call the hospital to get everything cleared up and they were not helpful at all but I thought I had managed to straighten things out. This July she got another bill stating that I would be sent to collections. I did not receive this letter or notice until late August because we were living an hour and a half away and she didn't want to open it. The bill is about $750. I have no way of affording that and I'm so scared because the collection agencies keep calling me. I tried again to call the hospital and they kept giving me different numbers to call. Eventually one of the numbers they gave me was just to a teen crisis center which didn't make any sense and was not going to help me out in the slightest. Does anyone have any advice of how I can clear things up or am I just completely screwed now and having to pay the bill? Please help I'm freaked out and having to deal with the trauma of what happened to me is already stressful enough.
