My house is a fairly new terraced house (15ish years old). We've lived there a few years and not really done much with the walls other than hang paintings (and a cupboard which fell down after about 7 months :( ), but I'm now in the process of securing heavy furniture to walls (thanks, babies) as well as other DIY projects. I'm having real problems with the walls. They are plasterboard (about 25mm) then a gap (about 15mm) and then what I assume is masonry (it's the wall to the neighbours house). The gap is nowhere near deep enough to fit in a decent sized plug which I assume I need to securely fix something to the wall, so I've tried drilling into the brickwork which hasn't gone well...I put up a set of coat hooks and ended up butchering the wall trying to drill into the brick - my drill barely made any progress (fortunately it made just enough to jam the plug in). Today I was trying to fix a dresser to the wall, this time with a much bigger plug and my attempt to drill into the wall ended up massively enlarging the hole in the plaster, rendering it unusable (fortunately it will be hidden by the dresser) and also making almost no progress into the brick. My initial instinct is that my drill isn't powerful enough. I'm using a cordless Black and Decker (EPC148 14.4v) and wonder whether it's not capable of making an impact on brick. For the sake of the basics, I am using a masonry bit for the brick drilling. Before I go and spend quite a lot of money on a powerful drill, does this sound like what the problem actually is? And is there any solution other than drilling into the brick? Any advice gratefully received before I have any more massive holes in the plaster... via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2xcYHFM
