A credit card which I've had for three months was hacked this week to make an online order with a company that provides home decor products. I got an email notifying me of a large purchase and I called to close my credit card and get a new number reissued. Then the home goods company called me to let me know that the item I "ordered" is out of stock. I got the guy on the phone to give me the address the order was going to be shipped to. That address is local, but in a very seedy part of town. The owner of the home is a landlord as he has a large listing of properties owned in my county. Theories: the renter took my card number with a skimmer (but how did they get my phone number?), the house is currently vacant and is being used to receive fraudulent goods.
My question is: Do I file a police report? The police here do not do anything about small crimes, they are too busy with larger fish to fry. They will take the report, though.
