I'm needing to get a quick temporary fix for this. I'm planning on remodeling my entire bathroom but not in the immediate future, but I can't let this go until then for obvious reasons. The house was built in the late 50s and it looks like some kind of hardibacker and thin green board behind the plastic wall tiles.
