A little background: my boyfriend works with his dad and earns 12$/hr with occasional bonuses and incentives. He gets a promotion about once or twice a year. As soon as he finishes his schooling and training he will be on salary and getting paid much more.
I get paid 10$ an hour at the moment with occasional bonuses and overtime. I do have credit card debt that sums up to about 300$ a month. (It could be much less but I prefer to pay off all my debt within a year just to get it over with. in a month or so I'll be starting a new job at 14$/hr.
We rent an apartment and our bills including utilities comes to about 1200$ a month. I am 20 and he is 23.
It might seem like a lot of debt/income ratio but we have been actually getting by just fine! I plan on minimizing our spending although I do have a hard time doing so. I tried calculating it myself, and to save up about 10,000 for a possible down payment we would each have to save 70$ from each paycheck for 3 years, which is doable. That's pretty much as far as I've gotten with it, houses where I live are between 2-300k.
Please help me on how to start or ways that I can save more. I know that 10,000 is a very small down payment but I'm just starting out my planning
