I felt I needed to share these thoughts of mine with this subreddit.

Buying monthly storage. I've seen people go broke trying to hold on to old items and furniture that they barely ever use, because they either got it from their parents or grandparents, or because they spent a lot of money on it, or because they think it is worth something it's not. They have mentally allowed these items to define part of who they are, or enjoy the feel-good factor but in reality doesn't do anything for them and costs a ton of money. What are we going to live our lives for the sake of preserving furniture or other objects? No. That's just a anchor around the waist. life is too short for that.

$180 a month might not sound like much, but it adds up to $2160 a year.... for things that are likely not worth anywhere near $2160 on the open market. If you don't pay on time, fees add up quite quickly.

This is on top of whatever you are paying for rent where you actually live. This is a huge waste of money. Either build more shelves in your home and move some things there, or sell or donate the stuff. If the time comes that you need furniture or other household items, buy them used on facebook marketplace or at a flea markets. There are hundreds of local listings for entire bedroom sets or dinner table and chairs selling for $20-$50... all sorts of appliances too. It makes no sense to spend thousands a year just to preserve your slowly-aging stuff. Also, don't overspend on rent. keep things small and efficient.

Realize this: If and when we reach old age and get slower, most of our stuff gets sold or donated and we end up in a tiny room in a nursing home where we can't keep your stuff anyway. Kids, if we have any, might want 1 or 2 items but they're not going to want to take even a quarter of our old crap.

We can't get caught up on property and ownership, get caught up in life instead and get where you wanna be. Focus on goals.
