I want to replace a vinyl tub surround with tile. The majority of the surround is glued directly to a cinder-block wall. The short side with fixtures is glued to drywall. This is a dormitory style building built in the 70's and all the cinder-block walls are finished.I'm fed up with this surround because the caulk seams always look dirty. I started removing the caulk and peeled back a bit of the vinyl surround out of curiosity. Everything behind the vinyl (in problem areas) appears to be in good shape. It doesn't look like any walls are hiding a mold problem.I want to leave the bathtub and replace the vinyl surround with tile. My biggest concern is that the single piece of wall with drywall may be lacking studs. This apartment is odd because the only wall that is not cinder-block is behind the shower and shared with another tenant. How would you tackle this? I'm pretty good with DIY but I've never laid tile before. However, I have access to a wet saw and any other necessary tools. Am I embarking on a reasonable project or should I caulk everything and pretend this idea never happened?Edit: Images via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2vvkndE
