Around May of this year I moved in with my bf and his roommates, a guy/girl couple our age. Before this I lived with my parents. The guy pretty much supports the household, he's letting us stay in his house rent free and we eat for free too. When I moved in he asked if he could claim me as a dependent for taxes and I said yes, it's reasonable since he's letting us stay there and I am basically dependent on him. My mom is now telling me my dad needs to claim me as a dependent and that I told her that was fine before I moved in, but I didn't. She says that she filled out a census at the beginning of the year that asked who all lived at my parents house and it's like a legally binding document she put my name on (because I lived there at the time) and if I change my address or let someone else claim me she can get in trouble with the government. She also says she can get in trouble with my dads insurance since she says it only covers his dependents and I was put on it for this year so I need to let them claim me. She says she thinks my dad and her deserve to claim me since they pay for my insurance and paid for my glasses this year, and since the guy would be paying for heat and water and stuff anyways if I weren't living there and since he's already claiming his gf and my bf. On the other end, he and my bf both say my mom doesn't really know what she's talking about, that you can't get in trouble for the census because people move and you can't get in trouble with the insurance because you're covered on your parents insurance whether you're living there or not until you're 26. I agree more with their side of things but I don't know for certain how things are and my mom is going to be angry with me if I side against her. In case she is right, I don't want her to get in trouble but don't want my friend to be upset either and I don't know what to do.
TL;DR Can my mom get in trouble with the government or my dads insurance if I don't let her claim me as a dependent? Do I have the right to choose who I want to claim me?
