I just moved and had been storing a huge number of books in my family's attic. Now they are all in about 25 small-to-medium sized cardboard boxes lining the perimeter of my 2BR apartment. We've lived in "cardboard boxes" in plain site mode for many years, and I'm tired of it. They should be on bookshelves.

However, I'm reticent to buy "real" bookshelves just yet. This move is brand new, our career situation is new, and we just moved way too much stuff as it is. I'm reluctant to take on more big, heavy, bulk shelving (unless it were free and easy to pick up nearby). I'd also have to buy probably several hundred dollars worth of the cheapest brand new bookshelves, only to feel we need to get rid of them for the next move (which very well may be within 1-2 years; much depends on how life goes).

I'm thinking of going very low tech and getting free pallet wood, hammering the boards apart, and setting up free-standing (not fastened together) shelves with free bricks or something as the spacers, maybe just 2-3 tiers high for each so they don't get too unstable. But I'm concerned about unloading these bricks if we do move, as I'm not sure the city would bulk pick them up or not. Or if this plan makes any sense.

I also do not want to actually do a home furniture construction project. Simple as possible.

Has anyone done something like this?
