No different than threatening to cancel your cable for a discount, you can do the same for your online brokerage, IRA, or other self directed account. For instance, if you have $100k in a Scottrade account, see what eTrade is offering in cash bonuses and call Scottrade to tell them your taking your money unless they match the offer.
I just recently used this to get a $300 cash bonus to my account! They're only ask was to keep my money there for a year. No requirement, just a request.
