I witnessed a truck reverse into my car which was parked outside my house one morning. I spoke to the driver and took photos of the truck and the damage to my car. I got a quote from an independent bodyshop for around £800 to repair the damage. My car is worth around 400 pounds. I was advised by the guy at the bodyshop to ask for £500 in cash and repair it myself. I requested this but they said they were not able to pay that and suggested I use their garage to repair it or go via insurance.
My question is, if this repair is more expensive than my car’s value, would their insurance write the car off and give me a check for the value of the car (and then would the car become theirs) or would they be obliged to repair it? I work long long hours so I can’t afford to be without a car at any point or to spend the time researching and buying a replacement car. Advice please!
