I'm a 25year old male who's been living and working in Canada on a Holiday work exchange program. I'm currently in the process of getting an open work permit and eventually permanent residence status with my common law spouse. She has just started working in real estate but that is not a very stable income and has yet to make any deals. We recently moved which tanked our savings and has gotten us 6000 in debt to her mother.

I have a few (3) more payments to the immigration lawyer of 550 a month as well as some other payments for taxes.

I make between 2000 - 2500 a month and Im just able to make rent, insurance, hydro and the rest of my monthly payments. I've also been terrified of bad credit all my life so have never had a credit card or anything like that so I effectively have no credit.

Our car has recently broken down and needs about 1000 in repairs done but my spouse is set on buying a new car, and I am currently trying to talk her down from making any bug purchases before I know I'll be allowed to continue to work and actually live in the country.

Can anyone think of any ideas that I can maximise my chances of getting out of this situation alive with any sense of financial security?

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
