Hey fellow redditors! I hope this post is relevant to the agenda and mission of /r/personalfinance. I was inspired to make this post after having read this current open topic:
So here is who I am and what I'm seeking. I'm currently 26 years old and residing in New York City. For the last 5 years or so, I've mostly spent my time working security guard jobs for multiple companies from retail to a couple of buildings. I've worked long hours making little pay and over the years, I've grown more and more pessimistic on my outlook of the future.
I tried school after high school. I went to a community college in Philadelphia for one semester and studied Criminal Justice for reasons unknown to me today. After the semester was over, I moved back to NYC to take care of my ailing mother and tried attending another college. I didn't even make it through the semester. Something about school and the accumulating debt made me lose any will to continue. I tried living out on my own and hoping that the independence would refine me into a more responsible and disciplined guy. The stress of bills eventually piled up since security doesn't exactly pay much.
I've recently swallowed my pride and moved back in with my mother. Live rent free and save as much as I can for whatever prospect I choose to follow. Since moving back to NYC (was residing in NJ for a little while), I've sought employment. I came from a job interview today for a security job I was offered starting me at $13/hr. It dawned on me how much more miserable I will be if I don't take the necessary steps to pursue something of value. I've tried to do everything alone up to this point and it's gotten me nowhere. That's where Reddit comes in. What can I do in my situation? The reddit community has been an invaluable source of support and information for many, so here I am, hoping I can receive some good advice as well. To outline skills and qualifications:
- High school graduate
- One semester of college
- Mostly security jobs
- Bilingual (Spanish and English)
- Somewhat military experience (Went to basic training, never shipped to MOS training due to knee injury, was generally discharged).
- Very computer literate. (Spend most of my time behind a PC, build this beauty I'm currently using, haha!)
What can I pursue? Besides computers, I don't have many interests that I can think of that can translate to gainful employment. I'm mortified in becoming stuck and never achieving anything great or not meeting the expectations my mother has of me.
I don't know if I want to return to school, but I'm open to options and opinions and what I can do to better myself and to start on a more successful path. I sincerely thank you guys in advance for any help and if any more information is needed, I'll be more than happy to provide answers!
