Currently getting paid $50k annually. New job is offering $70k. Assume all benefits are comparable.
New job increases commute time from 10 hours per month to 40 hours per month. Take home pay per paycheck is currently $1400 and new paycheck would be $2000 ( estimated).
I calculated that my gasoline costs alone would go up $200/month. As well as other associated costs-insurance, tires, and oil changes. So the $1100 increase per paycheck isn't completely "real".
Another big factor for me is proximity to our kids. I currently work 5 minutes from my kids' school and daycare. They are young so tend to need more attention. So there is a soft cost associated with being nearby.
Would you take the new job offer in my shoes? Money isn't everything for me. We strive for balance.
Not thrilled with current job, but don't hate it either. New job represents a better title but not a real improvement in daily duties.
Edited:OP typo and math mistake on the new take home amount
Edit #2: Also, because of the increased commute and responsibilities I may have to give up a side gig (coaching sports) that pays $6000/year. Which is truly my passion.
