I live in the bottom floor of a duplex. I never paid much attention to lights until I started following this thread last month, but since then I have started to look for every possible savings.

By toggling a few breakers, I discovered that I am paying the electricity for the lights in my communal basement space. There are three light installations, each with two fluorescent tube bulbs. They're left on 24/7 because the switch is in a weird location and people are lazy.

I found a calculator online to see how much they were costing me on an annual basis. Turns out it was $205 worth of electricity per year. We installed a $25 motion sensor light today and I expect to cut that number down significantly. Assuming it cuts the electric usage by 90%, I just paid my Netflix bill in perpetuity!

Edit: make sure you have permission from the property owner before making any major changes!
