I am a 25 y/o female. I got pulled over the other night for not having my lights on. It had just gotten dark and my lights are normally on "auto" but for whatever reason the weren't that day. Someone flashed their brights at me, and I realized my lights weren't on and the moment I turned them on there were red, blue, and white lights in my rear view. I pulled over, rolled all my windows down, and placed my hands on the steering wheel.

The cop asked if I knew why I was pulled over and I said no (it really didn't hit me at that moment!). He said my lights weren't on and asked for license and insurance. He looked at the expiration date on my insurance and took my license back to his car.

When he returned, he explained that driving with your lights off is usually a sign of a DUI, but that I didn't seem intoxicated (and I wasn't). He game me back my license and said he was letting me off with a warning, all he needed was my social and phone number. I felt uneasy but I immediately rambled them off (I was nervous and thankful to be getting out of a ticket) and he told me to drive safe and have a good day. We pulled up at the next light and we should have both been next to each other in the different lanes, but he stayed behind me (I thought that was odd).

The next day I called the police department. They said it isn't customary to ask for phone numbers or socials unless they are running you for a warrant. They asked what color car and uniform the officer had. They told me none of their officers have white cars, they only have black. They also said they don't wear black uniforms, but light grey shirts with navy pants. They said it sounded like it wasn't an officer and wished me luck...

Advice I've received is to notify all credit bureaus, buy LifeLock, and to call the police back and file a report. Is there anything that I'm missing? Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any way this was a real police officer? Did a "cop" just steal my identity?
