I received a letter in the mail from a debt collector regarding anesthesia from a medical procedure I had done about a year and a half ago, but I'm still a dependent who is in school. What can I do?

As I said, I received a letter today in the mail from debt collector concerning me owing a sum of more than $2000 in the mail which is from a surgery I underwent about 17 months ago.

The letter states that the amount is now long past due. But the thing is, I'm just a 21 year old college student with no real income as of yet, and I'll probably be in school for another two years. I'm still dependent on my parents, and I live at home. I assumed my father had taken care of the bill, but evidently he hasn't. I didn't realize the amount would be in my name. What, if anything, is there for me to do solve this problem?
