I'm going to college in the fall and I need to buy some things, namely a laptop, and I was thinking that since I can pay it back immediately, it would be a good opportunity to open a credit card (especially if I can save money with cash back deals, etc)
I have money in my checking and savings from gift money and temporary work BUT I don't currently have an income and don't have the time or transportation to work off campus in the fall or for more than 10hrs/week.
I have no debt and will not be paying any bills myself, which is a plus in terms of money. The only things I would put on this card are occasional restaurant purchases and maybe personal things like clothes or school supplies (but I'm pretty good with saving my money so I'm not overly concerned on that front).
If I have no income/minimal income and no regular payments, is a credit card a pointless idea for now?
Also, I applied for a discover student card two months ago and was denied because my monthly income isn't high enough. Nothing has changed since I applied, so I'm assuming I'll be denied again if I apply.
Im not really sure where to go if I need a card--I was thinking Bank of America cash rewards card, since my family and I all use them for savings/checking and I could cosign with one of my parents to be approved. It's not really marketed for students though, which makes me nervous. Is the Bank of America card a good idea?
Thank you for any advice!
