I was going through the /r/personalfinance top posts of all time in the debt section the other day during my lunch break (why? because I'm a weirdo I find that sort of thing cool). Anyways, I saw a post that looked oddly familiar. And the OP in the thread had some peculiar similarities to my situation and even the same tone. And then it hit me. I made that post on a throwaway account a year ago. So today, I looked at my remaining debt and realized I could finally make my last payment. And so now thanks to the advise of you guys who told me to stay at home with parents instead of moving out I am officially debt free. In addition to that advise I have maxed out my 401K at work and have around 20K in my 401K, a few grand in a vanguard roth IRA and 5K safety net hidden away in a bank account with 1% interest. I also bought a used Japanese Acura for 9K that is running well and perfect for my needs and just enough to appease my inner grease monkey. I'm feeling great about my finances and I'm looking forward to my financial independence from my parents.
Now This: My parents are getting ready to move into another home and flipping the one they currently live in. Is it safe for me to move out and live on my own or should I still take advantage of rent free living? Since last year there's been a few developments. I got a girlfriend, and got a raise at work and I'm now making about 60K. There's also some medical things I'd like to get squared away as well such as getting lasik and fixing my deviated septum, each will cost about 5K. (Luckily I have great health insurance through my employer, and specifically chose the best plan because I had planned to get these procedures at some point.) I know we worship sound financial decisions above all else here but I really think that living on my own might be the right decision for me and that the value spent on rent might be worth it. Living at home for the last 5 years since college have all compacted in my memories at this point and its hard to distinguish one year to the next. I think I'm ready for a change.
Thank you & Love you all.
