If one has made the 'mistake' of picking individual stocks for their Roth IRA or other long-term retirement account, what is the best strategy for selling and transitioning to more robust index funds? Is the best strategy to sell immediately and reinvest because the long-term gains will be greatest in a diversified fund and timing the market is a fools errand? Or, is it more advantageous to wait and sell stocks individually when they are at high value (and for the ones that have lose value, to wait to recoup losses)?
