Hi folks,

First of all, I just want to say how awesome and wonderful it was to find this subreddit. I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who rages against modern disposability culture.

I have a Sansa Clip Sport that decided on Friday to go insane, acting like I'm continually pressing the volume-down button and causing various other problems. I suspected water damage (I was cooking while this happened) and put it in a cup of rice but to no avail.

Prior to this device I had five different Sansa Clip+s, none of which lasted more than a year before the headphone jack housing came loose inside the device. Some of those five I replaced under warranty; others I cracked open and used superglue and/or a folded-up wad of paper to keep the headphone jack in place as a stopgap measure.

Prior to those I had an iPod, which I had replaced twice under the first-year warranty; the third iPod actually lasted a decent number of years, but gave me serious problems the whole time.

To make a long story short, I'm sick and tired of fixing broken MP3 players and buying new ones when I can't fix them anymore.

Top priorities:

  • Durability (of course)

  • No touch screen. I can't stand them, and I like operating my devices without having to look at them.

  • Support for podcasts

  • No modifications required. I don't want to have to Rockbox anything or buy an old device and fix this one broken thing or replace a particular fragile internal component with a better one or buy various accessories to improve durability. I want to be able to walk out of the store already listening to my podcasts (metaphorically speaking, since it won't have my podcasts on it yet and I'll likely be buying it over the Internet anyway), and not have to walk back into the store for another five to ten years or more (metaphorically speaking, since by then stores will be extinct).

  • I don't have a smartphone, so I'm not going to be using my smartphone as a replacement MP3 player :)

Nice to have:

  • Smaller size is usually better

  • Longer battery life is usually better

  • Less expensive is usually better, but honestly at this point I've wasted so much money buying new devices every year that if I had to sell my car to buy a truly durable one it would still be worth it in the long run.

  • microSD card slot. I currently have my music on a microSD card, but if push comes to shove I'll just copy everything over using a computer as an intermediary.
