I messed up twice in the past week.
1
Signed up for a new credit card about a month ago. Completely forgot to log into the website and set up autopay. Got an email over the weekend from Mint telling me I was charged a late fee. Called the credit card company, politely explained that this was a new card I forgot to set up auto-pay, and asked if they could waive the $25 late fee. She quickly agreed and also waived any interest that would have accrued since I paid the full balance that day. (I also set up auto-pay so it won't happen again!)

Recently moved and wanted to cancel my security system monitoring, but I forgot with the chaos of moving. It auto charged my card on Friday. I called them today asking if they could cancel my subscription and refund me the $25 monthly fee. I know from previous experience that they do not normally pro-rate if you cancel in the middle of a month, but they agreed to refund me the full amount and cancel my subscription.
In both cases, it was my fault for forgetting and I wasn't entitled to a refund. I was fully prepared for them to say no, and accept the fees as a "stupid tax." But because I took a few minutes to call up and explain what happened and politely ask for a refund, I saved $50. :)
