21m, student I have never had a traditional job, or for that matter a traditional life. And last summer I was primarily a bike currier. And after a long summer of biking (making pretty good money on a completely flexible schedule) I decided that next summer I wanted a more social job and decided to apply to a nearby restaurant the following year. I got the job and enjoyed the first day and every day after that I became more and more depressed to the point where I quickly started looking for alternative employment. I am a film student currently and have had some pretty good success finding relevant freelance work in that field, so I decided to take on as many freelance gigs as I could manage while juggling a full time restaurant job. It got to the point, where I asked my mangers to get a month off because career related work was picking up. They were very supportive and let me pursue it while keeping me technically employed (obviously no pay) and this month I have had amazing opportunities working for a couple startups, big name brands and securing my first freelance company client. Not only am I in much better spirits, furthering my future career but I have also doubled my income so far this month. Of course freelance work is much less reliable/regular than a steady service industry job, so who knows what will happen next month. But for now I am glad I took the leap of faith and pursued more career related work.
