I have searched through this sub and didn't really find an answer to the question that I have, and I honestly wasn't sure where else to post this.

I just moved into a 2 bedroom townhouse, 640 sq ft. No central AC because it would have been $75 more rent each month and I am not comfortable with the cost of living in this area to commit to that. Now it's hot as crap outside and my house stays at 85 - 88 degrees and I just can't deal with it. I tried have a box fan blow in at one end of the house while another box fan blows out, and it didn't change much of anything.

At this point, my wife and I sleep in the living room since we don't have furniture anyway right now (just moved in 3 days ago), plus it's cooler down there.

Question: If I were to buy a window AC unit, but am looking to only have the bottom floor of my house under 80 - do I need to buy a large unit? Or could I get away with the smaller 5,000 - 8,000 BTU? And if I have a smaller unit working to help cool more sq feet than it is meant for, is that going to kill my electric bill?

Any advice is appreciated.

Note: I also have those two extra box fans to work with too. I don't know if there could be a strategy to use the A/C plus box fans to just help? :/
