I was sued by a creditor but only found out being seeing it on my ccap. Now they're telling me I owe $5000 on a credit card that only had a limit of $2000. What should I do?

This debt isn't even on one of my credit reports anymore. It's that old. I offered 3k to settle but they refused to settle for less than $3800. I've thought about lawyering up but that will just cost more either way.
